Biking Tour in Bhutan
Within this short period of time, one can cover two western districts of Bhutan, Paro and Thimphu (capital). This tour is best suitable for those who are deprived of time but needed the glimpse of what Bhutan stands for and its beauty. Scores of historical sites are located within these two districts.

Day 1 : Bagdogra to Phuentsholing.

Drive 175 kms to Phuentsholing in approx 4h30. The drive is beautiful and very green as you cross several small towns, villages and many small and big Tea Gardens. On arrival Jaigaon, checkout at Indian Immigration and enter Bhutan where you will meet your tour guide. Process your entry and route permit at the Bhutan immigration and the Transport office. Later in the day, visit crocodile farm which is near the town and familiarize yourself with the bike and the traffic rules of Bhutan. Dinner will be at the hotel. Overnight at in Phuentsholing

Day 2 : Phuentsholing - Paro 175 kms

After breakfast, ride up the mountains towards Paro. On the way will visit famous Kharbandi Gompa from where you will have the scenic view of the plains of India. You will have to stop at further check points to register your vehicles and permit nos at Rinchending. You will cross several small towns of Gedu, Chukha and Chunzom, the confluence of Pa Chu and Thim Chu. The road climbs until Gedu and thereafter settles down as you can sight couple of huge waterfalls across the river. It is about 5-6 hours of leisure ride to reach the most beautiful valley in Bhutan, Paro. Later in the evening, walk around town, try some local bars and relax. Overnight at in Paro 

Day 3 : Paro - Thimphu.

After breakfast ride up to Tiger’s Nest, the most famous and sacred site among all the places in Bhutan. The walk is about 2h30 till the top. One hour into the climb there is a tea point from where you get a very good view of the monastery, they also serve lunch here. After lunch, hike back down and then to town to visit the National Museum and depart for the capital, Thimpu. The scenic ride along Pa Chu till you reach the confluence at Chunzum is a photographer’s delight. Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 4 : Thimphu Halt.

After a leisurely breakfast go sightseeing to a few places of interest such as Art & Craft School, National Library and the Takin Preserve to see the National animal of Bhutan. From there you can drive bit further up to the BBS tower to get a bird’s eye view of Thimphu city. Then ride to Kuensel Phodrang aka, the Buddha Point, the tallest ‘sitting Buddha’ statue where you will have a panoramic view of Thimphu valley, the whole of north valley and the southeast valley. Drive down to town for lunch and relax. Free for the rest of the day, you can walk around town, visit shops and bars and relax. Overnight in Thimphu.

Today we enjoy the night with Bhutanese Dinner at Bhutanese House. 

Day 5 : Thimphu to punakha (1 night camping at Punakha )

Camp site: Ground opposite Punakha Dzong (Pho Chhu side)
Start from Thimphu around 12 noon after early lunch. There are 2 road blocks along the way (One at Dochula and the other one at Lamperi).  Road Open timings are mentioned below.
Upon arrival at the camp site (around 3pm), there will be a welcome Suja-Desi combo with nga-ja and some snacks.
After the welcome, make yourselves comfortable and relax at the camp with some chilled beer near the river.  This will probably start from around 4:30 – 5pm along with barbeque and will go on till dinner and after that. Dinner will be at 8:30 – 9pm.
Overnight at Camp opposite Punakha Dzong (Pho-chu side)

Day 6 : Thimphu – Punakha – Phobjikha 155 kms

After Breakfast ride to Punakha. Punakha was the old capital of Bhutan. En route visit the 108 Druk Wangyel Chortens at Dochula Pass (3100m), then further down we will visit Chimmi Lhakhang, continue riding to Punakha Dzong, considered to be one of the most beautiful dzongs in the country. Punakha Dzong was the capital of Bhutan until 1965. After lunch at Punakha, stop at Lobeysa to enjoy the local market which is full of incredible faces and food. Further we ride towards Phobjikha valley. Overnight at in Phobjikha valley

Day 7 : Phobjikha – Trongsa - Chumey 145 kms

Ride towards Trongsa. On the way we will cross another pass, Pele La 3300m which crosses the Black Mountains, traditional boundary between west and central Bhutan and we will descend towards pretty villages like Rukubji and Chendebji. We will have lunch at Trongsa with a beautiful view of Trongsa Dzong and continue a very nice ride to Bumthang. After the Yotung la pass (3400m), the dramatic scenery changes to gentle spruce and fir covered slopes. Bumthang is known as the ‘Switzerland in Bhutan’. Our hotel is in the first valley, overlooking Domkhar Tashicholing palace at Chumey Village. Overnight at, Bumthang

Day 8 : Chumey – Chamkhar (halt) 75 kms

Ride to Chamkhar valley after a leisurely breakfast and visit some interesting places of interest like Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang. Have lunch in town and ride towards Mebartsho (The Burning Lake) is not a lake as such but a small stream instead which gets collected into a small pool.
 From among the four major valleys in Bumthang, Ura is the highest, widest, coldest and considered the most beautiful. The village is a fine example of a Bhutanese cluster settlement. Overnight at Arya Zamlha Guest House in Ura, Bumthang.

Day 9 : Ura – Mongar (150kms)

Start at a leisurely pace from Ura in the morning, the ride is along beautiful and mostly empty roads with forests on either side and sometimes cliff like roads for about an hour. The road then starts ascending till Thrimshingla pass (3700m), the pass that divides East and West Bhutan. Stop at Sengor, a small village about 18kms after Thrumshingla for tea. It’s all downhill from the pass till you reach Lingmithang, a beautiful road town, the temperature is also much warmer from hereon. Cross the Kurizam bridge and start driving up to Mongar town which is about 25kms. Overnight at a Hotel in Mongar

Day 10 : Mongar -Trashi Yangtse-Trashigang (195kms)

First part of the ride is up to a small pass, Korila pass. From here it is downhill all the way to Sershong, along the way we ride along the slopes of the mountain and the switchback roads at Yadi. Go for an excursion to Trashi Yangtse. Without many trees the ride along the slope is a wonderful experience as there is nothing to block your view. Trashi Yangtse is one of the remotest districts of Bhutan. Ride back to Trashigang after lunch and rest for the day. Overnight at  Hotel in Trashigang

Day 11 : Trashigang – Samdrup Jongkhar (India-Bhutan border) - 190kms

Have breakfast and start riding toward Samdrup Jongkhar from where we will exit Bhutan and enter Assam in India. It is about 180km and the ride is long meandering along the slopes of mountains as you gradually descend in altitude and drive southwards to the sleepy town of Wamrong. On arrival at Samdrup Jongkhar, Checkout permits at immigration checkpost. . Overnight at  Samdrup Jongkhar. 

Day 12 : Exit Bhutan via Samdrup Jongkhar gate

Bhutan is an incredibly special country. It was a step into Shangri-La, and we all took away a piece of Bhutan with us.
